Logistics

Every time a delivery team member walks past a house that they have already delivered to is your delivery team’s time and money down the drain!

The logistics of the delivery round is crucial to your pounds per hour calculation. An average for new estates (One car length driveway) is between 6-8 hours per 1000 per person. Minimum wages are £7.70 per hour for casual labourers so £61.60 per day (8 hours), the incentive is, they walk faster, the higher the hourly rate, so if they do 1000 in 6 hours, they earn £61.60 divided by 6 = £10.27 per hour. If you have a car driver, remember fuel costs etc.

On average expect to pay a deliverer £55 per 1000 and the car driver £65 per 1000.

For heavier weights e.g booklets etc add 50p per gram per 1000. For instance, someone calls and wants 1000 booklets delivered. An average A5 leaflet weighs in around 5 grams but the booklet weighs 50 grams.

Your normal cost Solus is say £90 per 1000 in the required area for a 5 gram leaflet meaning your team can carry the entire load with them (no returning to the car for refills).

Take your normal cost per 1000 = 90. Take 45 (the difference between 5g and 50g) and multiply by 50p (half of 45) = 22.50 and add this to your standard price. 22.50 + 90 = £112.80 per 1000. I suggest you pass the extra on to your delivery team as they are the ones carrying the extra weight.

Take an average of your areas and time between two letterboxes. If longer than 28 seconds, you will need to adjust your rate for that area and pass the extra costs onto your client.

Unless you are paying by the hour and you have timed your various areas, a “take the rough with the smooth” approach is needed with your staff. Sometimes they may be doing terraced estates (10 seconds between each home) which obviously puts them on a much larger rate per hour so either adjust for the time taken per area or pay the same on condition that sometimes harder areas may have to be done which averages out the rate per hour.

Having one person delivering is beneficial for one road with cul-de- sacs off as they can stay on one side and automatically end up where they started.

Having two people delivering is almost three times faster than one person for “normal” estates as there is no need to “zig-zag” down a road.

Having three people+ (one with a car) is hugely beneficial especially in harder areas such as hills or steps etc as your delivery team does not have to carry heavy loads, water or food. For hilly areas, the car driver takes the delivery team to the highest point and meets them at the lowest point meaning the team are always walking downhill.

Remember, delivering for 6-8 hours straight can mean each of your delivery team can cover over 20 miles walking a day. If steps are involved, the energy levels used can cut the teams delivery pace by up to a half.
